Our Mission
To serve as a catalyst and facilitator in creating networks, fostering communications, and developing and testing solutions to contemporary issues among individuals, organizations, and communities, working beyond the walls of the academic institution.
Overview
In May 2017, the Cheyney University Task Force, appointed by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors, made its final report on a new business model for Cheyney University’s transformation. Among the recommendations adopted by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education was the creation of the Cheyney University Institute for the Contemporary African American Experience.
In alignment with Cheyney University’s long-term vision, is a model that leverages the University’s reputation and legacy as the nation’s first historically black college/university (HBCU). Initially, the Institute would seek project partnerships concentrating on the study and impact of and solutions to contemporary issues around race, ethnicity, access, and diversity in American Society—attentive to the broader impact in the national and even international communities. Further, the Institute will enhance the three pillars which represent Cheyney’s transformation—excellence in academics, character, and social responsibility.
The Institute is centered around six core areas — Healthcare, Bioscience, Agribusiness, Education, Technology, and Criminal Justice.
